The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) consist of initiating and conducting follow-up investigations for crimes committed in Sumter County. CID is staffed with investigators who specialize in violent crime, property crime, victim crime (physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect), financial fraud and Internet crimes. Investigators are responsible for interviews, crime scene documentation, producing case files and coordinating with prosecutors to build cases to bring closure to victims and their families. The majority of CID cases are adjudicated in General Sessions Court by the Third Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office.

The CID also includes a chemist, crime scene forensic technicians and an evidence custodian. These investigators are responsible for evidence analysis, processing crime scenes, photographing crime scenes, as well as collecting, logging and preserving evidence for court.
