Charlie Kubala Memorial Trust

Kubala1SGT. CHARLIE KUBALA

On the evening of February 26, 1996, Sgt. Charlie Kubala responded to what would be his final call serving the citizens of Sumter County, South Carolina.

Charlie was a 13-year veteran of Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and a shift supervisor. He was a husband and a father to two beautiful children that he talked about all the time. He was very active in the community — on duty and off. Charlie Kubala was a dedicated leader and mentor to many, including the youth involved with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 333.

On that terrible evening in 1996, Kubala was doing what he loved — serving and trying to protect the citizens of Sumter County — when he responded to a call about a prowler.

The loss of someone so dedicated to the law enforcement profession was tough for all, especially his family. Just after his passing, several members of the sheriff's office and the Sumter community came together to ensure that his children would be taken care of when it came time for them to attend college. The citizens and businesses of Sumter have come together with law enforcement for more than 20 years to remember Sgt. Charlie Kubala and to honor his memory by participating in the annual golf tournament to raise funds for the Charlie Kubala Memorial Trust.

Through the years, the mission of the trust has expanded to include providing financial benefits for the spouses and children of any law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in Sumter County. The trust also awards three $1,000 scholarships to local high school seniors each year.

In August of 2013, the Charlie Kubala Memorial Trust Board voted to spearhead a project to erect a monument honoring the law enforcement officers who have died or have been killed in the line of duty in Sumter County. The monument, located in front of the Sumter County Judicial Center, stands in honor of officers from all local and state law enforcement agencies that have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to the Sumter community.

The trust is a registered 501c3 and is overseen by a board of directors comprised of representatives from Sumter County Sheriff's Office, Sumter Police Department and several citizens from the Sumter business community.
