Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center is integral to local government’s public safety function and is an essential element of the local criminal justice system. The detention center serves five basic purposes:

  • To receive and process people arrested and taken into custody by law enforcement;
  • To hold accused law violators to ensure their appearance at trial;
  • To hold offenders convicted of lesser offenses — usually misdemeanors, but also low-level felonies in some jurisdictions — as a court ordered sanction;
  • To hold individuals remanded by court for civil contempt; and
  • To hold offenders for other jurisdictions or those awaiting transfer to prison or other facilities.

Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center is comprised of a 560-bed jail that houses local, county, state and federal inmates of both pre-trial and convicted status. Detention center staff is responsible for the housing, custody, care and control of all individuals incarcerated in Sumter County. Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center is dedicated to serving and protecting the citizens of Sumter County by maintaining, in an effective manner, the highest degree of security for citizens, and maintaining the safety of both inmates and staff. Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center’s personnel are committed to upholding the basic human rights and dignity of all incarcerated persons in a manner that embodies ethical conduct, integrity, honesty, transparency and professionalism as ordered by the United States Constitution, South Carolina Code of Laws and detention center policies and procedures.
