AVIATION UNIT

The mission of the SCSO Aviation Unit is to enhance public safety through effective aerial support for disaster relief, criminal surveillance, searches, prisoner transport and other emergency response missions. This unit, formed in November 2013, operates a Cessna 172N Skyhawk that was purchased using drug seizure funds at zero cost to taxpayers. The Aviation Unit currently has three pilots who are ready to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day.

MARINE PATROL

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol is responsible for patrolling the waterways in Sumter County including areas of Manchester State Forest, Poinsett State Park, portions of the Wateree River and Sparkleberry Swamp. The Marine Patrol accomplishes its duties with the use of a center console boat for the main waterways and a Johnboat for the more confined areas.


MRAP
MRAP, MINE RESISTANT AMBUSH PROTECTED (CAIMAN)
Obtained through the federal government’s 1033 program, this armored vehicle is able to protect deputies during high-risk situations to maximize officer safety. This vehicle's size also made it an asset during the 1000-year flood as deputies  rescued trapped citizens.

Robot
PACKBOT EOD (EXPLOSIVE ORDINANCE DISPOSAL) ROBOT

This robot is controlled by remote and is equipped with a camera and audio system making the device useful in many different facets. Designed for bomb disposal, the robot is primarily used by law enforcement to decrease human contact with dangerous chemicals, barricaded subjects and surveillance.

Also obtained through the federal government’s 1033 program, this 4-wheel-drive vehicle is used to access areas of the county that with dense terrain or deep standing water.
